Folding Space-Time
Blown and Slumped Glass (2020)
The Theory of Relativity explains how space and time are woven together in a multidimensional fabric called space-time. “Folding Space-Time” illustrates this cosmic fabric that the entire universe is composed of. In physics, diagrams and models representing the space-time fabric is often manifested as a grid. Utilizing this pattern as a reference, I created this piece through an elaborate process beginning with a traditional glassblowing technique called reticello to create this gridded pattern in the form of a flat disk (otherwise known as a rondel). I advanced this piece further by employing an unconventional slumping method that I’ve developed in my practice to warp the gridded pattern. The process of making this piece resulted in extreme contortions that indicate the complex bends and folds that exist in our universal fabric. The intricate overlaps and distortions of the lines signify the intersections in our lives and the universal interconnections we have with one another.
