Duality
Concrete, Rebar (2020)
Duality refers to having two parts but with opposite meanings. The paradox of duality explains that in order to achieve wholeness, one characteristic cannot exist without its counterpart. Concrete and steel are both known to be durable materials; however, under certain conditions, both materials have free-flowing and malleable properties. Though “Duality” exists in a physically rigid state, this piece would not be possible had it not undergone the specific conditions that bring out the opposing qualities of the materials. This piece bridges life’s many dichotomies and reflects on embracing such qualities like unity and separation, movement and stillness, harmony and dissonance, wholeness and emptiness.
